Indians vs Army

About 12 miles east of Canyon, TX is the Palo Duro Canyon state park. It is the 2ND largest canyon in the US and is 1000ft deep. The last great Indian battle in Texas was fought here in 1874 when the army discovered a huge camp of Comanche Indians in the canyon and forced them to return to their own territory.

We spent 2 nights in this beautiful park. Our motor home is the one on the very left side of the picture. The cactus was in bloom as well a other wild flowers, wild turkeys walked casually through the campground. One the the highlights at the park is a musical drama called TEXAS and it was about the history of the panhandle and the canyon. The backdrop of the stage is the high canyon wall several hundred feet back, there was room behind the stage for real horses, buggies, trains, etc. to maneuver. Realist storms were created and thunderous lightning bolts came down the canyon walls and struck trees, prairie fires were also realistic. By all means don't miss TEXAS if you are in the area.
