Elliston is a small sea village about 3 miles so. of Bonivista. It's claim to fame is the root cellars dotting the landscape. However the biggest and most fascinating draw to the village are 3 islands that are Puffin nesting grounds. The islands are mesa shaped with high rocky cliffs that give good security. The puffins breed and raise chicks for 3 months then fly to sea and never return to land until the next season. At this time the waters are packed with capelin, a small fish the puffins catch to eat and feed the chicks. You can't see the the chicks as they are in the burrows, when the parents fly in with capelin hanging out of their beaks they immediately disappear into the burrow to feed the chicks.
The capelin is also a major food source for the humpback whales and they can be seen blowing and surfacing all around, when they go down they lift their big tail fin out of the water.
Pics, root cellar, puffin nesting colony-island separated from where people are standing by 100 feet, puffin burrows, puffins, last another sea bird called the Black Guillemot with a fish in his beak.
That looks like so much fun. Victoria would love to see all those puffins. They are especially fun to watch swimming at sea world. Looks like another great trip. You really know how to tribtravel!!
